German officials seized cooked bats and nearly a ton of fish when police stopped a truck entering the country from Belgium, authorities said on Wednesday.
The federal police said on Monday a patrol stopped a vehicle at the exit outside the city of Aachen and found bats under the fish. A veterinarian from the local consumer protection department arrived on the scene and ordered the bats and fish to be confiscated.
The police confiscated the van, which was not insured.
The 31-year-old Ivorian driver has been charged with criminal charges of entering the country illegally without documentation or a driver’s license, police said in a statement. He also faces administrative proceedings for violating food hygiene rules, and local authorities are investigating whether he violated bat protection laws.
A court in Aachen on Tuesday ordered the driver to be detained pending his extradition to the Italian authorities, where he was registered as a resident.
