Leaked US documents: reports of the deployment of British special forces in Ukraine

Allegations that members of the British Armed Forces were operating in Ukraine were published in the press section, citing secret documents that were leaked, it is not yet clear how and by whom.

Yesterday, the UK Department of Defense warned that the leaked information was “inaccurate” and could be part of an effort to spread “disinformation”.

However, the media, including the public broadcaster BBC and The Guardianreports that some of the documents that appear to be genuine indicate that up to 50 British Army Special Forces soldiers were “deployed” in February and March of this year to Ukraine, along with dozens of their counterparts from other Western states.

There were almost twice as many of them as US (14) and French (15) special forces troops.

The documents, The Guardian points out, do not clarify where exactly the special forces soldiers were deployed, or what exactly they did. Prior to the start of the war in February 2022, the UK was involved in the training of Ukrainian personnel.

According to US media reports, the documents may have originally been hosted on the Discord platform popular among video game enthusiasts and remained unnoticed there until they began to circulate on social networks. They embarrassed several governments in the West, especially the US government.

Asked whether Washington expects more such documents to be released, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby acknowledged on Tuesday that “the truth and honest answer to your question is: we don’t know. What if it worries us? What are you saying?”
