US: Pharmaceutical companies try to overturn court ruling on abortion pills

More than 300 pharmaceutical and biotech executives, including the CEO of Pfizer. Albert Burlasigned today an open letter requesting that a federal judge in Texas overturn a decision to suspend the marketing authorization of mifepristone pills used for medical abortion.

On Friday, Conservative Judge Matthew Kasmerick suspended the US Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of the abortion pill two decades ago, effectively banning the drug from federal sale.

The decision comes after an appeal by anti-abortion protesters, ten months after the US Supreme Court’s landmark ruling that gave every US state the power to ban abortions on its territory.

Judge’s decision The authors of the letter note that Matthew Kasmerick undermines the jurisdiction of the FDA.adding that he ignores decades of scientific evidence and legal precedent.
