Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that there was a general tendency to always blame Russia for everything when asked about allegations that Moscow was behind the leaking of US intelligence documents on several countries, including Ukraine, Reuters reported.
The US national security community is grappling with the fallout from the release of dozens of classified documents, including the impact on the sharing of sensitive information within the government and relations with other countries, two US officials said.
The documents, whose authenticity has not been independently verified by Reuters, contain information about the war in Ukraine, including casualties on both sides and other details.
Some national security experts and U.S. officials say they suspect an American might be the author of the leak, given the breadth of topics covered in the documents, but they have not ruled out pro-Russian players.
A former CIA officer said it was highly likely that Moscow orchestrated the leak to cause confusion and potential rifts between Washington and its allies.
“I cannot comment on this at all. You and I know that in reality there is a tendency to always blame Russia for everything. It’s a disease in general,” Kremlin spokesman Dmytro Peskov said in response to questions about allegations of Russia’s responsibility for the leak.
Asked about Washington spying on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Peskov, who called the leaks “quite interesting,” said it could not be ruled out.
“But the fact that the United States has been spying on various heads of state for a long time, especially in European capitals, has repeatedly surfaced, causing various scandalous situations,” he said.
