The US Treasury Department announces that it has found Microsoft guilty of selling software in violation of restrictions imposed on Russian companies in the Crimean peninsula between 2012 and 2019.

Microsoft, Microsoft Ireland and Microsoft Russia failed to verify the organizations that ended up using the software sold, the initial report said. The American giant made a deal with an intermediary, who then sold licenses to blacklisted companies.

The Treasury Department cites several violations found at Microsoft in the case. One of the problems was that Microsoft was conducting inspections based on incomplete lists that did not include all subsanctioned entities.

Another problem was that some employees of Microsoft Russia, released in the meantime, knowingly sold software to sanctioned entities, submitting pseudonyms in documents to hide their identity.
