Grammy-winning rapper Coolio died of a fentanyl overdose, his manager said on Thursday, six months after the musician was found dead at a friend’s home in Los Angeles, aged 59.
Coolio’s manager said the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office notified the rapper’s family on Thursday that the singer had died of a fentanyl overdose.
His real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr. He started making music in the 1980s but made history in 1995 with the hit “Gangsta’s Paradise”.
For this song, which sounds in the film “Dangerous Thoughts” with Michelle Pfeiffer in the title role, the musician received a Grammy Award.
During his four-decade career, he has recorded eight albums, and has received three MTV Video Music Awards and an American Music Award.
His other hits include “Fantastic Voyage”, “Rollin’ With My Homies”, “1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin’ New)” and “Too Hot”. Although his star was not as bright as in the 90s, Coolio remained active in music until his death.
