Dutch Ambassador to the United States Andre Haspels presented a bouquet of double-petal orange ‘Jill Biden’ tulips to the US President’s wife during a ceremony on Wednesday. The meeting took place at the residence of the head of the Dutch diplomatic mission in Washington.
During the meeting, the first lady of the United States wished that the flowers named after her would become a sign of the long-term friendship between the two countries.
According to the agency, in the entire history of the Netherlands, tulip varieties have been named after the first lady of the United States seven times.
For the first time, this honor was awarded to Frances Cleveland – the wife of Grover Cleveland, the only sitting US president who served two consecutive terms and received double numbering in the list of presidents as the 22nd and 24th head of the American administration. (1885-1889 and 1893-1897).
Prior to Jill Biden, the last US First Lady to have a tulip variety named after her in the Netherlands was Laura Bush, wife of the 43rd US President George W. Bush (2001-2009).
