War in Ukraine: both sides are hitting the east

On Tuesday, Russian and Ukrainian aviation and artillery continued to shell enemy positions on the front line in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian General Staff said.

The Ukrainian side stated that it had destroyed two electronic warfare systems.

Russian artillery continued shelling Avdiivka, which remains in the hands of Ukrainian forces.

The government in Kyiv has warned Ukrainians in Russian-controlled areas of the country to leave the territory as soon as possible amid mounting scenarios of an imminent Ukrainian military counterattack.

“I advise Ukrainians in the temporarily occupied territories to either go to third countries or get ready,” Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk said on Telegram, without going into details.

“You know what to do, take care of yourself and your children,” she stressed.

“Representatives of the occupying forces still have time to unbutton themselves,” the Ukrainian vice-premier continued, saying that some had already gathered. “It would be nice if they brought their partners with them,” he added.

Mayor Vitaliy Barabas said that while civilians have been repeatedly ordered to leave the town, about 15km north of the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk, some civilians are still there.

“There are eight more children in the city, but you have to be a very dedicated spy to find them,” the mayor told the Ukrainian Pravda newspaper.
