Terry Gu, the billionaire founder of Foxconn, Apple’s main supplier, has announced that he will run again for the presidency of Taiwan, seeking the Kuomintang anointing. The Foxconn leader, who retired in 2019, originally ran for president that year but withdrew after losing the Kuomintang, or Kuomintang, anointing.
Gu has extensive business interests in China and is known for his close ties to Beijing’s leaders.
The Kuomintang supports the island’s autonomy, but considers it important to maintain good relations with China and advocates a “one China” policy, in contrast to the ruling DPP, which advocates both Taiwan’s separate identity from China and independence from it.
Although Gu said he is considering running again in the January 2024 presidential election, the Kuomintang has not yet chosen its presidential candidate.
When asked if Gu would be included in the party’s nomination process, KMT chairman Eric Chu did not give a clear answer, but said that Gu was “an important part of the blue camp”, referring to the colors of the party.
At present, New Taipei Mayor Hu Yu-ih is the favorite of the Kuomintang candidate.
Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party has already selected Vice President William Lai as its candidate for 2024 as President Tsai Ing-wen is unable to run again after two terms.
