A 74-year-old British woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease faces deportation from Sweden, where she has lived for 18 years, after local authorities rejected her family’s application for a post-Brexit stay in the country on the grounds that she did not have enough documents.
The family pleaded with the authorities in a personal letter explaining her situation, but last week it was reported that the police “insisted” on her removal, asking the British embassy to find a UK care facility for the woman.
Labor MP Hilary Benn called the case “deeply shocking” and urged the European Commission to intervene urgently, while campaigners urged the Swedish government to act quickly to stop the deportations.
Brits in Europe, an organization set up to protect the rights of British citizens living in the EU before Brexit, raised the issue in Brussels.
Jane Golding, a Berlin-based lawyer who co-chairs the group, also sounded the alarm to the European Commission in a letter last month and on Monday. “This woman and her family should not have been in this situation at all. We have warned that the vulnerable and the elderly are the ones who will suffer when the UK and some EU countries such as Sweden decide to adopt a system whereby citizens will have to reapply for their post-Brexit status,” he said.
