Netherlands: Passenger train derailment and fire – at least one dead, dozens injured

At least one dead and dozens injured (reportedly 30) is yet a report of a train accident in Netherlandsduring the night.

Of the injured, 19 were hospitalized, including the train driver.

As it became known, a passenger train, in which there were at least 50 people, derailed after colliding with a rail repair crane, which was on the tracks for an unknown reason. A freight train crashed into the same crane.

The front carriage of a passenger train derailed and fell into a field, local ANP news agency reported. According to the Dutch agency, the second carriage fell on its side, and a small fire broke out in the third.

The accident happened at 3:30 am (local time) near Forsothen, a village between The Hague and Amsterdam, while the train was traveling from Leiden to The Hague.

According to local media, rescuers and several ambulances from different regions of the country, even from northern Holland, arrived at the scene.

A freight train was also involved in the accident, which also struck a crane but did not derail, according to Dutch railway maintenance company ProRail. The report said the train was not carrying hazardous substances, while lime was the cargo, according to Reuters sources.

Dutch Railways (NS) tweeted that train service between the city of Leiden and parts of The Hague was canceled due to the collision.

“The inhabitants of Forseten were awakened at night by loud horns, flashing lights and banging,” state broadcaster NOS describes.

“One of the residents said that his house was shaking, the derailment was like an earthquake. The whole area was on the street,” says a local resident, adding that “everyone called 112.”

“We went to look and saw an overturned train. People inside panicked and jumped out of the windows of the train,” an eyewitness told the Dutch network.
