The “murder” of Russian military blogger Vladlen Tatarsky may be revealedfurther errors within Kremlin and his inner circle, ”says the American think tank.
Tatarsky, whose real name is Maxim Fomin, died in an explosion in a cafe allegedly owned by the head Wagner mercenariesEvgeny Prigogine.
He was one of the most influential military bloggers and an “honored personality” in the Russian military information space.
In a recent report on the war in Ukraine, the ISW (Institute for the Study of War) reported that sources in the Russian Interior Ministry revealed that the country’s security services had been aware “of the plans to assassinate Fomin for some time.”
According to the same source, Fofin was “a Wagner-linked convict who escaped from the Donetsk Regional Prison during the early stages of Russia’s 2014 invasion of Donbas.”
As ISW notes, his death is likely part of a “bigger pattern of escalating internal conflicts in Russia” involving Prigozhin and the Wagner group.
“Fomin attended another event earlier in the day (Sunday, April 2) without incident, so it looks like the attack was deliberately staged on a website owned by Prigozhinadds ISW.
“Killing Fomin can work like a warning to Prigogine increasingly questioning the essence of the Kremlin’s rhetoric about the war in Ukraine, while indirectly expressing interest in the Russian presidency either in competition with Putin or as his successor.
Another interpretation of the attack, given by the American think tank, is that it could have been a message to the Russian citizens themselves, aimed at “self-censoring” those who doubt the course of the war.
