An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps military adviser has died from injuries sustained in an Israeli airstrike near the Syrian capital, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported Sunday.
Israel has carried out attacks for years against targets it says are linked to Iran in Syria, where Tehran’s influence has grown since it began supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a civil war that began in 2011.
Iran says its officers are acting in an advisory role in Syria at the invitation of Damascus. Dozens of members of the Revolutionary Guards, including senior officers, were killed in Syria during the war.
“Mekdan Megani was wounded during the Zionist attack early on Friday morning and became a martyr,” Mehr News reported.
Friday’s airstrike, Israel’s sixth attack on Syria in March, also killed another military adviser and Revolutionary Guard officer named Milad Haidari, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The Revolutionary Guards promised to respond to the Israeli attack on Friday.
