The centre-right alliance GERB-SDP of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, 63, and the business-friendly conservative bloc PP-DB of former Prime Minister Kirill Petkov, 42, according to opinion polls, they are reported to garner around 25-26% of the vote.
After the fall of Mr. Borisov, after a decade in power, no party capable of securing an overwhelming majority or a stable coalition emerged, and interim governments succeeded each other.
A climate of frustration is exacerbated by economic apathy exacerbated by the fallout from the war in Ukraine and a split in a country historically and culturally close to Moscow, divided over aid to Kyiv.
Polling stations opened early in the morning and will close at 20:00. Exit polls coming soonbut official final results are not expected within four days.
The concern of many Bulgarians is that today’s polls will lead to the same balance of power and thus a political stalemate will be reproduced, with the population unable to cope with inflation, sinking into poverty and complaining about the deplorable state of the healthcare system.
