Police say at least 13 Hindu worshipers have died after a temple floor collapsed in India.
About 25 believers fell into a wide well used for religious ceremonies when the floor of the temple that covered it buckled under their weight. Ten people were safely rescued.
The accident occurred in the city of Indore in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
“Police found 11 bodies in a well, and two others died of their injuries in the hospital,” where they were taken, state interior minister Narottam Mishra told reporters.
Local authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident. A police officer told AFP that the rescue operation was still ongoing.
Footage broadcast by local TV channels shows rescuers deploying ropes and ladders to reach stranded worshipers.
Temples in India are currently overcrowded due to the religious festival of Rama Navami in honor of the Hindu deity Rama.
