Russian President Vladimir Putin may visit Turkey next month on the occasion of the opening of the Akyuyu nuclear power plant (April 27), Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said late Wednesday.
“Mr. Putin can come to Turkey for the inauguration ceremony. Otherwise, he can participate in it online,” the Turkish President said in an interview on Wednesday evening with A Haber and ATV TV channels.
Mr. Erdogan argued that the Akyuyu nuclear power plant is a vital investment for Turkey as it upgrades the country’s power grid.
According to the schedule, the first reactor at Akugiu will be commissioned this year, and completion of the project is expected no earlier than 2025.
The construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey was agreed in 2010 with a subsidiary of the Russian state company Rosatom.
The nuclear power plant in the province of Mersin on the south coast of Turkey will have four reactors with a total capacity of 4.8 GW.
