“Another key event of the Russian presidency will be a public debate at the high level of the (Security) Council on the topic “Effective multilateralism by protecting the principles of the UN Charter.” This meeting will be held under the chairmanship of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov,” his spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told the media on Thursday, France-Presse and Agerpres reported.

According to her, Lavrov also plans to lead a discussion on the Middle East on April 25.

“Bad Joke”

Earlier on Thursday, Ukraine qualified the future chairmanship of the UN Security Council as a “bad joke”.

“Russia has usurped its place; wage a colonial war; its leader is a war criminal wanted by the ICC for child abduction. The world cannot be a safe place with Russia in the UN Security Council.” he accused Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba.

From Saturday for the whole of April, Russia will take over the leadership of the UN executive body, replacing Mozambique.

At the UN, Russia says it is facing a “collective West” that has alienated it from the nations of the world since the start of its military offensive in Ukraine in February 2022.

Lavrov’s last visit to the UN in New York dates back to September of last year, during the General Assembly.
