The United States has informed Moscow that it will no longer share data on its nuclear forces, a White House spokesman said, explaining that the change is Washington’s response to Russia’s decision to suspend its participation in the new START treaty to reduce strategic offensive weapons.
“Under international law, the United States has the right to respond to Russia’s violations of the New START Treaty by taking proportionate and reversible countermeasures to induce Russia to fulfill its obligations,” a spokesman for the White House National Security Council said.
“This means that since Russia’s suspension of New START is not legally valid, the US is legally allowed to forgo biennial updates in response to Russian violations,” the same spokesman added.
