USA: school banned song by Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton

Elementary school principals in Wisconsin have banned a class from playing a Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton song that promotes LGBTQ acceptance, calling it “contradictory.”

The students were planning to perform “Rainbowland” at their spring concert, but the school removed the song from the program last week.

Parents in the area say the decision was made because the song encourages LGBTI acceptance.

The superintendent confirmed to Fox6 that administrators removed “Rainbowland” from the first grade concert because it may not have been “appropriate for the age and maturity of the students.” He also cited the school board’s policy of not bringing up controversial topics in the classroom.

“Let’s dig deeper, put judgment and fear aside,” says the song on Cyrus’ 2017 album Younger Now. “To live in a rainbow country, where you and I go hand in hand. Oh, I’d be lying if I said it’s all cool, all the pain and hate is happening here,” he continues.

The superintendent previously banned rainbows and pride flags from classrooms and suspended the school district’s fairness and diversity project in 2021, according to the Associated Press.

Representatives for the two artists did not immediately respond to emails from the Associated Press asking for their views on the ban.

In recent years, seats on the Wisconsin State School Board have become increasingly partisan. Republicans have won every statewide school board election in 2022 and have used the seats to challenge policies, from rules on transgender children to COVID-19-related restrictions.
