Minsk commented on Russia’s plans to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus explained why, according to Minsk, the construction of a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons (NW) of the Russian Federation does not contradict the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). The corresponding statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus published on its website on Tuesday, March 28.
The training of Belarusian pilots capable of flying aircraft with specific ammunition, the modernization of such aircraft, as well as the deployment of nuclear warheads on the territory of Belarus without transferring control over them to Minsk, as well as access to relevant technologies “, in no way contradict the provisions of articles I and II of the NPT”, indicated in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Military cooperation between Belarus and Russia is carried out in strict accordance with international law,” Minsk said, adding that the measures taken were not “an innovation”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus called plans to deploy nuclear weapons on the country’s territory “forced response actions to strengthen its own security and defense capabilities”.
Putin – about the special storage facility and the Iskander complex
On March 25, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that construction of a special storage facility to place Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus was due to be completed by July 1. Ten aircraft are ready to use this type of weapon, the Iskander aircraft carrier complex has been delivered, Putin said. According to him, the crew’s training will start on April 3rd.
Expert: Belarus could become a target
Political analyst Artem Shraibman previously expressed the opinion that Belarus in such a situation could become a target if the war between Russia and Ukraine moves to a more global level – clashes between the Russian Federation and NATO.
“This is a threat for residents of nearby cities and the whole country, depending on how powerful the charges are. Belarus becomes a potential battleground, this is the main risk,” he said.
