Russia: may demand compensation for the explosions of the Nord Stream gas pipeline

OUR Russia may claim compensation for damage caused to natural gas pipelines Nord Stream explosions, RIA Novosti reported on Monday, citing a Russian diplomat.

Last September, pipelines linking Russia and Germany across the Baltic Sea suffered inexplicable explosions in what Moscow called an act of “international terrorism.”

“We do not rule out that the issue of compensation for damage caused by explosions on the Nord Stream gas pipeline will be raised later,” Dmitry Birichevsky, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s department for economic cooperation, told a Russian news agency.

He added that Western countries oppose Russia’s draft resolution of the UN Security Council, which calls for an independent international investigation into the explosions at the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

“Despite this fact, we intend to continue to insist on a thorough and transparent international investigation with the mandatory participation of Russian representatives,” Birichevsky said.
