France: PM to meet opposition over pension in early April

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Born has scheduled a reception for parliamentary groups and political parties, as well as collective representatives, in the week starting April 3 to “bring peace to the country,” she told AFP.

A schedule of possible meetings with trade unions and employers’ organizations will be set next week, the premier said.

Violent demonstrations and incidents have shaken the country since the March 16 no vote in the National Assembly passed a controversial reform to raise the retirement age. More protests are expected on Tuesday as the government and unions warn of the risk of “chaos”.

“There must be appeasement,” Bourne said, dismissing a call by CFDT union head Laurent Berger to put the reform on hold.
