Germany accuses Russia of nuclear threat
The German government has criticized the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was reported on the evening of Saturday, March 26, by the dpa agency, citing a statement by a representative of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In Berlin, Putin’s words were called “another attempt at nuclear intimidation”. “The comparison with NATO’s joint nuclear missions is misleading and cannot justify the measure announced by Russia,” said the spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry. Germany does not have its own nuclear weapons, but American nuclear warheads are deployed on its territory within the framework of NATO. At the same time, the German government recalled that Belarus has repeatedly promised at the international level not to deploy nuclear weapons on its territory.
Pentagon: There are no signs that the Russian Federation is preparing to use nuclear weapons
For its part, the US government said that Washington will continue to monitor the situation. “We see no reason to adjust the deployment of our own nuclear forces, nor any signs that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons. We remain committed to collective defense within the NATO alliance,” the Pentagon press service said.
The day before, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia would place tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus. According to him, this does not violate the obligations of the Russian Federation on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, as Moscow will not transfer them for use by Belarus. At the same time, Putin said that the United States also has nuclear weapons deployed by its allies in Europe. “We’re just doing what they’ve been doing for decades,” he said.
