Russia has taken Belarus as a “nuclear hostage”, Ukraine said on Sunday after President Vladimir Putin announced that he would deploy “tactical” nuclear weapons on the territory of his close ally, AFP reported.

“The Kremlin has taken Belarus as a nuclear hostage,” Secretary of the Security Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov wrote on Twitter, adding that this decision is “a step towards internal destabilization of the country.”

The Russian president’s statement “maximally increases the level of negative perception and social rejection of Russia and Putin in Belarusian society,” Danilov added.

Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that he had obtained Minsk’s consent to deploy “tactical” nuclear weapons in Belarus, a country that neighbors the European Union and has been led since 1994 by Alexander Lukashenko, his closest ally.

Although Belarus is not directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, Moscow used its territory to launch its offensive on Kyiv last year or to carry out strikes.

Russian officials have repeatedly issued thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine if the conflict escalates significantly.

Vladimir Putin motivated his decision on Saturday by Britain’s willingness to send depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine.
