Thousands of protesters, some reportedly from Italy, clashed with large police forces in southwest France today, not over President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform, but over plans by a local agricultural enterprise to build reservoirs in the area.
Thousands of protesters (6,000 according to local authorities, 25,000 according to protest organizers) gathered in the Sait-Solines region of western France with the intention of blocking plans to build mega-reservoirs for agricultural use.
Protesters clashed with more than 3,000 police officers and violent clashes erupted around construction sites in the area resulting in injuries and arrests.
“As the country stands up for pensions, we will also stand up for water,” protest organizers gathered under banners reading “reservoirs thank you” said.
The projects under consideration, according to their critics, amount to “privatization” of water and “capture” and cause environmental problems.
