Poland against Germany for supporting Ukraine: “It’s not as generous as it should be”

As Europe looks for ways to further arm Kyiv in its ongoing war with Russia, Poland’s prime minister has said Berlin is not supporting Ukraine enough.

In an interview with Politico after the Brussels summit, the conservative Mateusz Morawiecki noted that Europe’s largest economy, which is Germany, should take the lead in the campaign to send military aid to Ukraine.

Germany should send more weapons, more ammunition and more economic aid to Ukraine as it is by far the richest country.Morawiecki said.

Poland’s prime minister acknowledged what Berlin did a turn in its policy – including with huge investments in the modernization of the army and the abolition of the ban on sending weapons to the war zone. In particular, Morawiecki highlighted Germany’s decision send Leopard tanks in the Ukrainian army.

“Three months ago Germany said it was impossible. Now it’s possible. So, they are changing their approach,” said the Pole.

Over the past year, Eastern European governments have repeatedly put pressure on their Western European counterparts to supply Ukraine with more advanced weapons and military equipment. And while powers such as Germany and France from time to time claim to have sent arms, vehicles and financial aid to Ukraine, Warsaw remains strictly in relation to Berlin.

I’m not attacking them, just stating the obvious.emphasizes Morawiecki. The Polish leader has lashed out at Berlin’s energy dependence on Russia, saying it is leading Europe down a dangerous path.

“Thanks to its grossly misguided policy towards Russia regarding gas and oil, they are jointly responsible for everything that happenshence the mess in the energy market,” he said.

“Germany made a tragic mistake by completely depending on Russian fuel. And we called them. We asked them not to do this,” he added.

According to him, he discussed his position on supporting Ukraine with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. “I have this conversation from time to time. And I ask him for more support. This is what I can do,” concluded the Prime Minister of Poland.
