Today, the US announced new sanctions against Belarus, whose leadership supports Moscow in its war in Ukraine.
According to the US Department of the Treasury, the Boeing 737 aircraft used by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is now subject to sanctions, which will complicate its maintenance, since the sale of spare parts for it will be prohibited.
Sanctions have also been imposed on two state-owned companies: BelAZ, which sells trucks, and MAZ, which makes trucks and buses. Washington accuses them of “intimidating employees who participated in strikes and peaceful demonstrations” after the August 2020 presidential election. MAZ even fired them.
“The US will continue to punish the (Lukashenko) regime and those who support repression in Belarus and Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine,” US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said.
