
Brazilian police exchanged gunfire with militants on Thursday as they broke into a Rio de Janeiro slum to arrest suspected drug dealers, killing 13 people, authorities said.
Police said the favela raid targeted drug dealers from the northern state of Para, where more than 40 police officers have been killed since 2021.
The Rio police said that all the people who died during the operation were criminals. He added that two suspects were detained and two women were wounded.
Television footage showed intense gunfire in the Salgueiro favela.
Rio police said they would release more information about the operation at a later date.
The O Globo newspaper reported that a notorious head of a drug trafficking organization from Para was killed in the raid, which has yet to be confirmed by the police.
