North Korea said it had tested a new nuclear-capable underwater drone in the past 48 hours in response to joint US-South Korean military exercises, North Korean news agency KCNA reported Friday.
The North Korean military deployed a new weapon system off the coast of South Hamgyong Tuesday through Thursday. According to the KCNA, a particular weapon system is capable of causing a “large-scale radioactive tsunami” with an underwater explosion and destroying enemy ships and ports. According to the KCNA, the underwater drone “can be deployed on any coast or port and be towed by a ship.”
North Korea fired long-range cruise missiles off its east coast on Wednesday, the South Korean military said shortly before the end of the Freedom Shield military exercise.
Pyongyang has spoken out against high schools run by South Korean and American troops, saying they are a rehearsal for an invasion of North Korean territory.
The test of the new weapon system took place about a week after the launch of North Korea’s most powerful Hwaseong-17 missile. This was the second test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) by North Korea since early 2023.
