Kyiv and Beijing are still unable to have a telephone conversation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Chinese President Xi Jinping because of China’s position, Mikhail Podolyak, head of the presidential staff of Ukraine, said in a television interview.
“China has not yet found its new political position. That is, does he want to deal with the issue of a settlement between Russia and Ukraine, or will he diligently remain on the sidelines. As far as I understand, China has not decided yet,” he said.
Mr. Podolyak clarified that the conversation between Zelensky and Xi is still in the plans, and that this is the idea of the Ukrainian side.
On Wednesday, Mr. Xi ended a three-day official visit to Moscow, generally avoiding claims of a Russian offensive in Ukraine.
According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Mr. Xi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, among others, discussed a peace plan in Ukraine previously proposed by Beijing.
The initiative consists of 12 points and includes calls for a ceasefire, respect for the legitimate security interests of all countries and resolution of the humanitarian crisis.
According to Putin, many ideas from the Chinese peace plan can be taken as the basis for a settlement when they are ready for this in the West and in Kyiv.
The Ukrainian authorities, for their part, said that Beijing’s proposals are general principles, without specific and thoughtful logistical solutions.
