According to the Department of Social Development, a survey of 1,200 young New Zealanders found that 68% experienced many bad feelings beyond “the usual grief of separation”.

The Love Better campaign is also part of the government’s broader national strategy to end domestic and sexual violence.

“New Zealand has a shameful record of domestic and sexual violence and we need innovative approaches to break the vicious circle,” said the Deputy Minister.

According to the Department of Justice, New Zealand police investigate over 100,000 cases of domestic violence each year.

Police received 9,723 reports of sexual assault in 2020, according to the Department of Justice, and about half of the people reporting sexual assault in New Zealand were under the age of 18 at the time of the incident.
