A newly discovered asteroid called “2023 DZ2” will fly a short distance from Earth on Saturday.
According to NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordinating Bureau, the asteroid in question has a diameter of about 55 meters, moves at a speed of 37 km / s and is expected to approach Earth at a distance of 160,000 kilometers.
While such occurrences are not uncommon, an asteroid of this size only occurs once every decade, NASA notes.
The US Space Agency indicates that the International Asteroid Warning Network will have the opportunity to analyze data from the 2023 DZ2 approach to improve the planetary defense program to cope with a possible threat in the future.
