The (Saudi-backed) government of Yemen and the (Iranian-backed) Shiite Houthi rebels are exchanging a total of around 900 prisoners, including Saudis.
The parties agreed on the exchange of prisoners after negotiations held in Switzerland with the mediation of the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
In particular, according to what was officially announced, over the next three weeks, the Houthis are going to release 181 prisoners, including 15 Saudis and three Sudanese, and the Yemeni government, on the other hand, 706 prisoners.
It is worth noting that this event took place just 24 hours after the announcement of the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
Tehran and Riyadh have supported opposing sides in the war in Yemen for years.
In this light, many are now arguing that the success of the Iranian-Saudi diplomatic rapprochement will be judged on the Yemeni front, where a rather fragile truce has existed for about a year since April 2022.
