OUR John KirbyA spokesman for the White House National Security Council told reporters that the United States is concerned that Xi, who is visiting Moscow, will repeat calls for a ceasefire when Russian troops remain on sovereign Ukrainian territory.

Kirby says Xi should talk to Ukraine’s president Vladimir Zelensky about the consequences of the war in Ukraine.

“We call on President Xi to directly pressure President Putin over the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. The world and China’s neighbors will certainly be watching closely,” he said.

According to Kirby, Xi and Putin appear to be linked by a “marriage of convenience” rather than a marriage of affection.

“These are two countries that have long been concerned about US leadership around the world,” he said.
