France in the boil: Impeachment proposal and scenarios for the next day for Macron

France is waiting for the final outcome of the parliamentary “battle” for pensions.

As things stand, the Conference of Presidents of the National Assembly of France will decide to put to a vote (today, Monday, at 1700 Greek time) the two votes of no confidence against the government.

If one of them is approved, then French Prime Minister Elisabeth Born resigns, and her decision to continue the presidential decree on the adoption of the reform of the country’s pension system is automatically canceled, bypassing the National Assembly, which is attended by parties supporting President Macron. they have a relative but not an absolute majority.

For a vote of no confidence in the French government to be approved, it must be approved by an absolute majority of the members of the National Assembly, that is, 278 deputies. At the moment, about 250 deputies are sure to vote for him, namely those who belong to the far right of Marine Le Pen, the left of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and independents.

The big question is how many of the 60 members of the centre-right opposition Republican Party are willing to vote for a vote of no confidence opposed by the party’s leadership. To date, a single-digit number of deputies from this party have publicly supported a vote of no confidence.

Emmanuel Macron, however, yesterday, Sunday, wished the controversial pension reform “end its democratic course with respect for all.”

If two votes of no confidence are rejected by deputies (which is considered the most likely scenario), then we are talking about a reform that raises the retirement age from 62 out of 64 years.

Society in turmoil

On a social level, France is preparing for another general strike next Thursday, and before that there will be strikes in various sectors of the economy, starting with transport and energy.

At the same time, most opinion polls show that French public opinion is clearly against the reform of the pension system and, in particular, against raising the retirement age to 64 years.
