The Russian president has ordered government officials to stop using the Apple iPhone over concerns that the devices are vulnerable to Western intelligence agencies, Russian business newspaper Kommersant reported on Monday.
At a Kremlin-sponsored seminar for officials involved in domestic politics, Sergei Kiriyenko, first deputy head of the presidential administration, told officials to change phones by April 1, Kommersant reported.
“It’s all over for the iPhone: either throw it away or give it to the children,” Kommersant quoted one of the meeting participants as saying. “Everyone should do it by March.”
The Kremlin may provide other devices with other operating systems instead of iPhones, Kommersant reports.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he could not confirm this information, but stressed that smartphones should not be used for official purposes in any case.
President Vladimir Putin has always said that he does not have a smartphone, although Peskov said that Putin uses the Internet from time to time.
