Middle East: Palestinians ‘have no hostility’ towards Germany

Palestinians they have “no hostility” to GermanyA Palestinian security official told AFP today, a day after the attack on a car carrying German tourists in Nablus, in the northern part of the occupied West Bank.

According to a Palestinian local security source who wished to remain anonymous, “a group of young men threw stones (on Saturday) at a civilian car with Israeli license plates” in downtown Nablus.

“Ugly and cowardly” attack

On Twitter, German Ambassador to Tel Aviv Steffen Seibert called it “disgusting and cowardly” that “mobs attack tourists because they don’t like their license plates.”

“Obviously we have no hostility towards a country whose citizens visit our cities,” Talal Nuekat, a spokesman for the Palestinian security services, said today.

According to him, young people “did not trust” the “foreign” car, fearing that it could be used by members of the Israeli security forces who entered the territory of Palestine, as is often the case.

Many of the vehicles with Israeli license plates in Nablus are stolen vehicles and are usually driven by young men.

As Duecat explained, the two German tourists were rescued by a Palestinian policeman.
