
Russian President Vladimir Putin made a last-minute decision to move to Mariupol, a Ukrainian city devastated by bombings, after his visit on Saturday to Crimea, which was illegally annexed nine years ago, the Kremlin said on Sunday, insisting the “spontaneous nature of the trip , reports AFP.
“Everything was very spontaneous,” Kremlin press secretary Dmytro Peskov said, recalling the Russian president’s first visit to Mariupol.
“Even his trips to the city were not foreseen,” as well as visits to the local musical theater or meetings with the residents of this port city, Peskov claimed.
Before that, on Sunday morning, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin had arrived in Mariupol.
It was the first trip of the Russian leader to this port city of Ukraine, which was besieged for months and occupied by the Russian army in May 2022.
According to the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin arrived in Mariupol by helicopter, and he himself toured the city behind the wheel of a car.
Vladimir Putin talked with local residents, visited important places and received a report on the reconstruction works in this destroyed city, the same source reports.
On Saturday, Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014, to mark nine years since the annexation.
