State Department: “Green Light” for Possible Sale of Landing Vehicles to Greece

The State Department gave the green light to a possible sale of amphibious assault vehicles to Greece.

The Pentagon has estimated that an intergovernmental agreement on amphibious vehicles and related equipment could be worth $268 million.

The potential sale will be through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program. The Defense and Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of this potential sale, providing the necessary certifications.

State Department Statement

“The Greek government has requested the purchase of, among other things: sixty-three airborne assault vehicles (AAVP-7A1), nine airborne command vehicles (AAVC-7A1), four airborne recovery vehicles (AAVR-7A1) and sixty-three machine guns. Also included are MK-19 Grenade Launchers, M36E T1 Thermal Imaging Surveillance Systems (TSS), Procurement Support (Spare Parts), Support Equipment (including Specialty Kits/Tools/Advanced Kits (EAAK), Technical Manuals, Technical Data Sheets (CETS), Integrated Management Services Accounting Support (ILS), Refurbishment of Obsolete Components, Calibration Services, Follow-up Support (FOS).

This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security goals of the United States by helping to improve the security of a NATO ally that is an important partner for political stability and economic progress in Europe. The proposed sale will enhance Greece’s ability to withstand current and future threats by effectively protecting maritime interests and infrastructure in support of its strategic position on NATO’s southern flank.
Greece participates in NATO operations as well as maritime efforts to combat terrorism and piracy. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not change the basic military balance in the region. There is no general contractor associated with this potential sale.
Accordingly, no known offset arrangements are being offered in connection with this potential sale. The proposed sale will not adversely affect U.S. defense readiness.”
