Moldova – Sandu: “As long as Ukraine holds out, there is no risk of war”

The president Maya Sandu declared today that he sees no danger of war in Moldova while Russia is fighting in Ukraine despite Russia’s attempts to destabilize its country.

In his speech to Parliament, Sandu hailed Ukraine for standing up to Russia after Moscow’s invasiona year ago, and called on Moldovans to unite in support of the former Soviet republic’s bid to join the European Union.

“There is no danger of war in Moldova as long as Ukraine is at war,” the president said from the parliament hall.

I want to assure our citizens that Moldova is not threatened by war now. The Russian military can’t get in here as long as Ukraine holds out – and (hence) protects Moldova. We are grateful to the Ukrainians for their courage and love of freedom.”

Moldova, a small country of 2.6 million sandwiched between Ukraine and Romania, is facing many challenges, including an energy crisis, growing poverty and social unrest, exacerbated by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The President of Moldova repeated accusations, which Moscow denies, that Russia he wants to destabilize Moldova.

Sandu noted that Russia, whose troops are based in Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria, will continue to try to destabilize its country “from within” and praised law enforcement agencies for curbing attempts to sow chaos.

In recent weeks, Moldovan authorities have arrested numerous alleged pro-Russian activists who authorities say have tried to enter the country. There were also several demonstrations organized by the pro-Russian party in the capital Chisinau.

“As long as I am president, Moldova will endure,” said Sandu, who became president in 2020.

“In 2030, Moldova should become a member of the European Union,” he stressed, adding: “I call on all political forces to make joining the EU a priority.” above all interests and unconditionally support this movement.
