The Russian Navy intends to equip its submarines with modern supersonic weapons, Navy Chief Mykola Yevmenov said in an interview published on Friday, reports DPA and Agerpres. The Russian admiral did not specify the dates when the fleet will receive new weapons.
“Let there be no doubt that we will do it,” said Mykola Yevmenov in an interview with the armed newspaper “Krasnaya zvezda”. The admiral never started equipping the submarine fleet with new missiles.
He told the cited newspaper that ten types of submarines are currently in service.
According to him, modern Caliber-type guided missiles have been tested on second-generation submarines, “and today all submarines in service, including strategic ones, can be equipped with them.”
The next step will be the transition to supersonic missiles, Admiral Yevmenov said.
So far, Russia has presented three types of supersonic missiles: “Avangard”, “Zirkon” and “Kinzhal”. Currently, they are considered virtually unstoppable air defense systems due to their very high speed, DPA notes.
Zircon missiles are now launched from ships and can be equipped with nuclear warheads. However, so far only one ship of the Russian fleet is equipped with them.
