Today, the British government announced the immediate ban on TikTok on government devices, citing security concerns.
“We are moving to a system where government devices can only access third-party applications on a pre-approved list,” Secretary of State Oliver Dowden, whose responsibilities include cybersecurity, told the House of Commons.
“We are banning the use of TikTok on government devices” with “immediate effect,” he stressed, stating that there is a risk of sensitive data being used on some platforms.
With this move, the UK is following the example of other countries, including the US and Canada, which have taken a similar decision on this announcement.
Particularly popular with young people, TikTok has been accused by critics of allowing Chinese authorities to access user data from around the world. TikTok denies this.
TikTok initially expressed disappointment with the British government’s decision.
