The Polish authorities liquidated a spy network that allegedly worked for Russia. The group was supposed to prepare for sabotage activities, including monitoring railways, state broadcaster TVP reported on Thursday morning.
The Polish Internal Security Service (AVB) has arrested nine foreigners on charges of spying for Russia, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminsky, who coordinates the work of the Polish special services, confirmed at a press conference on Thursday.
“Over the past few days, the Internal Security Agency has detained nine people suspected of collaborating with the Russian special services,” he said. The minister said that the arrested allegedly “conducted intelligence activities against Poland and prepared acts of sabotage on the orders of the Russian special services.”
“The detainees are foreigners from the eastern border. In relation to six of them, the court ruled to apply temporary arrest. The prosecutor’s office charged him with spying for Russia, as well as membership in an organized criminal group. The prosecutor’s office is also taking measures against three more suspects who were detained with yesterday,” he added.
“A safety alert has been issued in connection with network activity on railway lines and national critical infrastructure,” Polish radio station RMF FM said.
The National Security Agency detained the suspects after they discovered hidden cameras on main routes and railway junctions that recorded traffic from the tracks transmission of images over the network. Dozens of such devices have been discovered.
RMF FM reports that they mainly concern sections of railway tracks in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, as well as near the airport in Jasonka, near Rzeszow. This is the main transit point for Western weapons and ammunition for Ukraine, and Poland, as the most important logistics hub, moves all equipment, weapons, ammunition and fuel to Ukraine.
“In connection with this action, service and police officers have been put on high alert. Uniformed officers pay special attention to the security of strategically important railway lines in Poland, and the protection of key vital infrastructure facilities has been strengthened, ”the RMF FM radio website says.
