WSJ: US TikTok will end unless Chinese owners sell their shares

The American government says that tik tak must change the owner status, otherwise the application may be blocked in the US.

Recently, accusations against the well-known platform have increased regarding whether it is “national risk”, due to the fact that it “collects data from millions of users”.

The Wall Street Journal first reported on the request to change TikTok’s ownership status, news that was later confirmed by the company itself to the BBC. However, for its part, the company claims that the “forced sale” will not change anything in the flow of data or access to them.

Recall that US officials have expressed concern for years that data from a popular application could fall into the hands of the Chinese government.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the Biden administration wants ByteDance to sell its stake so TikTok can be unhooked from China. According to the publication, this request was filed by the United States Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS).

The BBC publication says that a TikTok spokesman did not dispute the words of the Wall Street Journal and confirmed contacts with CFIUS, indicating, however, that the exact request from the American side was not specified.

He believes that a possible change of ownership will not change anything in terms of access to user data.

For the first time tik tak became a target of the American leadership, was recorded in 2020, when Donald Trump was still the President of the United States.

The popular app collects user data on a scale comparable to apps like Instagram and Twitter. Recently, there has been increasing speculation among officials that the Chinese government may have access to this data.

According to the BBC and Wall Street Journal.
