Poland has announced the elimination of a spy network after local media reported the detention of several people suspected of spying for Russia, Reuters reports.
According to RMF FM, the channel that first announced the arrest of the alleged Russian spies, the group was planning sabotage activities.
“I would like to emphasize the great success achieved by the officers of the Internal Security Agency, as the entire spy network was exposed,” Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak told Polskie Radio 1.
“This is undoubtedly proof that the Polish services work very effectively for the security of our country,” he added.
Blaszczak did not want to provide more information, saying that the details of the case will be presented by the Minister of the Interior, Mariusz Kaminski, at a press conference to be held today.
But according to information released by the RMF, six of those arrested were from countries east of Poland and worked for Russian special services.
RMF FM reported that spies had hidden cameras on important railway routes, mainly in the Podkarpackie region in southern Poland. According to the same source, the cameras were also found near Jasionka airport near Rzeszów, which became a key point for the transfer of weapons and ammunition to Ukraine after the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24 last year.
The RMF also said that following the discovery of the spy ring, security measures have been stepped up on key railway routes and critical infrastructure facilities.
