This year, the death toll in events related to the Fire Festival that ended on Wednesday in Iran has increased by 22% compared to last year.
In particular, according to the IRNA agency, 26 people were killed throughout the country, and another 4,368 were injured.
By tradition, on the night of the last Tuesday to Wednesday before the Iranian New Year (Novruz), crowds of people gather in public places. Many jump over bonfires (a custom reminiscent of “anastenarides” in Greece) and set off fireworks to say goodbye to the passing year. Iranians celebrate the arrival of the new year on March 21st.
According to Iranian health authorities, eight out of ten injuries involved men under the age of 79, and 44% of those injured were minors (aged 6 to 18).
