After earthquakes and floods in southern Turkey – At least 14 dead

At least 14 people were killed in flooding caused by heavy rains in the earthquake-hit provinces of Şanlıurfa and Antiyaman in southeastern Turkey on Wednesday.

The container, which contained a family of four seismologists in Antiyaman, was swept away by the current. “Unfortunately, we found one of the four missing dead. The search for the remaining three continues,” Turkish Interior Minister Suleiman Soylu said during his visit to the region.

In Şanlıurfa, fast-moving streams swept away everything in their path, flooded basements and first floors, turned roads into rivers, videos broadcast by Turkish TV channels are shown. Only in this province recorded 12 deaths.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said that rescue teams with the help of divers were sent to rescue residents who were in flooded areas, as well as to search for missing people. It notes that more than 100 millimeters of rain fell in the earthquake-affected provinces of southeastern Turkey in 24 hours.

The two provinces are home to some 2.7 million people who are still struggling to recover from the deadly February 6 earthquakes that killed more than 48,000 people in Turkey and left millions homeless.

Tens of thousands of earthquake victims remain in tents and containers – the temporary roofs of many flooded due to heavy rains.
