
A man from the Ryazan region of central Russia was prosecuted for “discrediting” the army because of a joke about Moscow’s withdrawal from Kherson, the independent Russian publication Meduza reports.
Vasyl Bolshakov, a resident of the city of Kasimov, Ryazan Region, is being prosecuted for “discrediting” the armed forces after he published a joke on the Russian social network VKontakte, his lawyer Andriy Kuryatnikov, Department of Internal Affairs, reported – this was reported by the human rights monitoring organization Info, which monitors political persecution.
Bolshakov faces up to three years in prison for the indictment, which was published on November 9, 2022, the day Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered the withdrawal of troops from the right bank of the Dnieper in the Kherson region.

In Russia, a criminal case may be opened for repeatedly “discrediting” the Russian military against those who were fined by the court under a similar administrative article during the past year.
Bolshakov was fined 30,000 rubles in July 2022 due to comments also in Vkontakte, writes OVD-Info with reference to data from the Kasimov district court.
