The Kremlin claims that the goals he outlined before the invasion of Ukraine can now be achieved only by military means, TASS reports.

“Achieving the set goals remains and will always remain an absolute priority for us. Now they can be achieved only by military means,” Kremlin press secretary Dmytro Peskov said.

He also stated that the Kremlin does not yet see the prerequisites for “the transition of the situation in Ukraine to a peaceful course.”

His comments came amid speculation about the possibility of new peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv after The Wall Street Journal reported in late February, citing diplomatic sources, that Germany, France and Great Britain, the largest European members of NATO, wanted to encourage Ukraine to start peace talks. with Russia

The plan will be included in the agenda of the July NATO summit in Vilnius, which Zelenskyi has said he wants to attend in person. Three European countries would like to encourage Ukraine to resume negotiations with Russia by proposing a pact to formalize closer ties between Kyiv and the North Atlantic Alliance.

Ukraine no longer believes Moscow’s promises

In an interview with HotNews.ro in early March, Mykhailo Podolyak, one of the closest advisers to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, said that a possible security plan developed by Berlin, Paris and London does not currently exist.

This plan does not exist now. It is not there and will not be. After a year of war, after tens of thousands of Ukrainians killed, you suggest that we kneel before Russia and start negotiations. Because that’s what this plan is all about. It sounds very strange: they (non-Russians) came here, killed people, raped, and you tell us that you should start negotiations and give them part of their territories,” he said.

“It’s very strange to think that politics is so simple, you give the territory and that’s it. Then I have a question: why do you think Russia will stop here? Why don’t you think that Russia will go even further? Naivety cannot be part of politics. In 2014, the Europeans told us to give up part of the territory and peace would come. After that came peace?”, he also told HotNews.ro.

“Russia entered our territory, launched rockets, committed several murders, rapes in Kyiv region, Zaporizhzhia and other regions. They violated international law. Only now, our prosecutor’s office has opened 70,000 cases about everything that Russia has done,” Mykhailo Podolyak emphasized.

Previous peace talks failed because of Russia

Further talks on the possibility of resuming peace talks took place in December, around Christmas time, but collapsed after the Kremlin said that any treaty ending hostilities must recognize Russia’s annexation of occupied Ukrainian territories.

During this period, Moscow has repeatedly stated that it wants peace if this demand is accepted.

The peace talks, which took place in March last year in Belarus, and then in Turkey, failed due to the fact that Moscow refused to meet one of the main demands of Kyiv – a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of the country.

Ukraine then agreed to recognize neutral status and abandon its desire to join NATO, despite repeated warnings from the United States that Russia did not really want an end to hostilities.

The negotiations were interrupted after the discovery of murders committed by the Russian army in Buch, Irpin and other areas of Ukraine.
