According to CNN, the cartel responsible for the armed kidnapping and murder of two American tourists and a Mexican woman in Matamoros, Mexico, released a letter of apology and handed over five of its members to local authorities.
An official familiar with the investigation told CNN investigators believe the letter is genuine.
” [Κάρτελ του Κόλπου] apologizes to the Matamoros community, Areli’s family and the affected American people,” the handwritten letter said, referring to a Mexican woman who was also killed in the shootout.
The bodies of two Americans killed in the kidnapping were handed over Thursday to US diplomatic authorities, a Mexican official said. Two other American tourists survived the abduction.
In one of the photos posted online, five men can be seen lying face down on the sidewalk with their shirts pulled over their faces. From above, you can see that they are in uniform checking them.
“The Gulf Cartel, Scorpion Group, strongly condemns the events of last Friday,” the letter said, highlighting internal problems within the cartel. “For this reason, we decided to transfer those who were directly involved and responsible for these actions, who always acted on their own decision and undisciplined, contrary to the rules by which [Κάρτελ του Κόλπου]”.
Both Mexican and US authorities are trying to pinpoint exactly what happened a week ago near the US-Mexico border, as there are still many dark spots.
The two rescued American citizens returned safely to the United States. One had surgery to remove three bullets in his leg and is still being treated at a Texas clinic.
